After Jamal Roberts was announced as the winner of American Idol 2025, the stage lights were bright, the fireworks were going off, but in one corner of the stage – John Foster bowed his head, quickly wiping away tears. The 18-year-old runner-up from Louisiana finally spoke after the controversial and emotional finale.

“I didn’t win the crown, but I left my heart on the stage,” John shared with the press immediately after the show.
Throughout the season, Foster made his mark as a new phenomenon in traditional country music. With his rustic voice and sincere spirit, he conquered millions of viewers with covers of everything from John Denver to Toby Keith, culminating in an emotional tribute on the finale with the song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”
When asked about the moment Jamal was called instead of him, John couldn’t hide his emotion:
“To be honest, I thought about it. Jamal is a special artist, a storyteller through music. I just looked at him and said: If it wasn’t me, it would have been you.”
Foster also said that the two had a long hug backstage, not because of who won or lost, but because they both understood that together they had created an unforgettable season.

“I didn’t bring home the crown, but I brought the love of America, and a journey that I will tell forever.”
When asked about his next plans, John laughed and said that he would return to Louisiana for a short time to “breathe the country air, see his family, and… continue writing the songs that I haven’t written yet.” He hinted at a new EP, while not hiding his ambition to pursue a professional music career.
“American Idol is not the destination,” John concluded. “It’s just the first step in a very long journey — and I don’t need a crown to tell me I was meant to be on stage.”
